As a wife, business owner and just plain ol person, I balance multiple roles in my life. With wanting to succeed in each of those areas, I have found the importance of dedicating certain amounts of time to each task or “role” and the tasks that fall under that category.
Before, I would just do whatever popped into my mind and found myself getting distracted a lot and either not accomplishing the task or accomplishing it but in more time than it should have taken.
For me, it was due to text messages that would come in, emails that ding, social media that pulls me away, business partners with questions, and other random things. And because of that, I actually would find myself not making time to even eat because I just wanted to cross something off my list.
It got exhausting. It was exhausting to look at my daily list and see that hardly anything was accomplished.
Then, a couple months ago in a business class that I attend (Systems for Success) we learned how to better manage our time and remain organized. The truth of it is, I didn’t value my time. I didn’t value all that I can accomplish and create with my time. Once I came back to the realization that my time is precious, I took steps to make sure that it remained that way.
Enter. Time Blocking.
My time is there to serve me, I’m not on this earth to serve time. Think about that.
I keep a fairly organized calendar on iCal. I love that it syncs with all my devices, but I decided that I needed to block time for random, non essential and some essential(like eating) things that take up time.
No joke, I made reminders for me to eat throughout the day. But, I also set aside 1 hour to respond to texts/phone calls/voicemails at a certain time, 30 min to respond to emails and an hour to post/respond on all social media. These time blocks are for personal and business related items. Along with this, I make sure to keep my phone on airplane mode till 9am and on ‘Do not Disturb’ all day. Yep, all day.
Now, this may sound silly to some of you, but doing this has brought me so much more freedom throughout the day. Because I know that I have time blocked for these daily menial tasks, and that they will be done in an allowed time, I can spend the many other hours of my day accomplishing the more time sensitive tasks. I also try to do this as much as I can for Renu and NUYU in that I only allot a certain amount of time for the tasks I am responsible for and meetings. It has done wonders!
If you are looking for a simple way to gain control back of your time, try doing this! Time blocking can be anything you want it to be. As simple or as complex. I know of someone that time blocks every area of their life. Impressive!
I encourage you to give it a try and see the transformation. As women entrepreneurs with multiple roles to fill, we can’t afford to not be organized.
